Capturing the “Aha!” Moments
I’m not the first in my family to practice visual storytelling. A cousin on my father’s side of the family, Hughes Michael, served as an artist and public information officer for the U.S. Marines in World War II. In battles, he drew charcoal sketches while crouched in fox holes to capture the agony of war and the human experience. Those sketches, and the paintings he completed afterward, informed the national war effort and promoted sales of U.S. war bonds. My middle name is Hughes, a salute to him, and I use my initials to allude to the wonder and whimsy of what I see and capture through the lens.
